My name is Cathryn and I started Skaapie (which means little sheep or lamb) in Afrikaans in Cape Town in 2007. I am now based in the Island of Jersey in the Channel Islands where i live in the countryside with my husband and 2 daughters. I make all my own felt from merino wool where each product is original and handcrafted, the patterns are hand drawn, wool is felted using wet felting method, I do my own dyeing and therefore due to the nature of this craft, no item is exactly the same. However when selling online, I do my best to match the product description and photo with what you receive. My favourite orders are custom made requests for special occasions, the more challenging the better.

When i was introduced to the enchanting world of wool and felting, I fell in love with it’s versatility, creative freedom and unique natural properties. It’s been so wonderful to see a revival of such an ancient craft in recent years.  I enjoy the relationship between colour and texture and am always striving to capture the subtlety of nature in my felt work.  I have always been a committed arts and crafts enthusiast but I guess having children inspired me to create my range of child friendly products ranging from blankets and cushions to toys and accessories. Handmade toys are not only more fun and creative but help children use their imagination too. I just love seeing how kids respond to a handmade item made with love. I think in today’s world, children need to reconnect with the natural world more than ever, and I hope I can contribute to that in some small way.
